Why does my low back hurt after pregnancy?

 Your Chiropractic Neurology questions answered:

Dear Dr. McNally,

"I gave birth to my daughter 3 months ago. It is my first child and the delivery was relatively easy. I’ve recovered well and have begun some moderate exercise and stretching but my lower spine hurts. It feels like something is pulling on my low back when I am walking, lifting, or standing. What is going on here?”

- Rachel M.

Low back pain or “pulling” is very common after pregnancy. The reason that the low back still hurts even three months after having a baby is because the body is still adjusting to the changes that occurred during pregnancy.  During pregnancy, the ligaments in the pelvic region become looser (due to the hormone relaxin), to accommodate for the birthing process and to hold the growing fetus.  As a result, restrictions occur in the pelvis and lumbar spine, which, if not correctly addressed during pregnancy, will persist after giving birth.

At home, core exercises are great for strengthening and stabilizing the area. You should also consider seeing a chiropractor who can help retrain the joints and muscles through adjustments and guide you through rehabilitation exercises.
